Hi, a few days ago, I took some pictures of a medium sized fly on a leaf in our garden. It has some red/orange markings that made me curious. I think it could be a Sarcophagidae (Sarcophaga sp.), but the red markings and the "furry collar" generate some doubts. Is that really a Sarcophagidae? Germany, Southern Bavaria, Munich (-West), leaf in garden, 191.05.2024, app. 8-10 mm (I don't really remember the size, but that should be ok, more or less) Greetings, Uli ukursawe attached the following image:  [267.36Kb] Edited by ukursawe on 23-05-2024 16:51 |

Tachinidae, probably tribe Winthemiini. European Sarcophagidae have bare eyes. |

Hi John & Eric! Thanks for the correction/determination. The hint with the hairy eyes is pretty useful, I was not aware of that. According to the images of Winthemia quadripustulata in the internet, it is certainly a very good match. The light brown scutellum and the reddish spots on the second segment are all there.
