Hello,

I photographed this fly near Penia (TN), Italy, 1500m a.s.l. on August 4th 2023. I think it is a Syrphidae, but is it possible to identify its genus or species from these photos?

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

Hi,

This is a female Sphegina. I dont know the species right now but I think you should be able to key it out to species level.

Best,
Jonne

Thank you very much Jonne! I tried following the key in Thompson & Torp (1986) and ended up to S. platychira, but I'm far from being sure about my identification. The sternopleuron seems to be gray/pollinose rather than shiny but I find it hard to verify in my photos.
