Which species please? about 9 mm Urban area. Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador

There is only one described species as far as I know, Zargopsinettia verticalis (Malloch, 1928). I do not know how many undescribed species there are. |

Many thanks John, is the image a good match with Z. verticalis or it's clearly enough different for be considered an undescribed species? There is very little info about this species in the internet! |

"... 2 scutellar setae, both strong, apical pair diverging ... Among the more distinctive characteristics of this species are the presence of 2 setae on each postpronotum and of 2 postsutural intra-alar setae, as well as the distinctive yellow head on a dark brown body." (Gaimari & Silva 2020) I see two postpronotal setae but crossed instead of divergent apical scutellar bristles. Malloch wrote of his Minettia verticalis "A striking feature of the species is the large number of rather strong, moderately long, bristles across the vertex." |

Thanks John! I'm not very familiar with chaetotaxy, but if I interpret correctly my photos, I see only 1 apical scutellar bristle: the right one, the left one is missing. And the right one is crossed with the border of left wing so it can give impression of being crossed with another setae. There is large number of bristles behind the eyes but I doubt it can be interpreted as the vertex. |
