Hello, I photographed this fly in the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, 1700m a.s.l. on February 19th 2023. I think it's a Muscidae, but is it possible to identify its genus or species from these photos? Thank you in advance, Emanuele ESant attached the following image: [293.29Kb] Edited by ESant on 30-08-2023 23:52 |

Hello Emanuele, my first thought was Pyrellia - but the mouth of your fly is distinctly protruding. I've found a resembling Neomyia albigena from La Reunion here: https://galerie-i...?ref=78649 where many characters are resembling your fly (wing venation, sparsely but noticeable dusting base of thorax and tip of abdomen, arista...)

Thank you Eric! The genus Neomyia seems to be the a very good match. As for the species, I'm not totally convinced by N. albigena, I think it may be something else. |

Thank you! My main doubts regarded the height of the face and the protrusion of the mouth, which seem different to the individual shown here: https://www.insec...hp?t=86992. Also the overall length and thickness of the thorax and abdomen seem slightly different. Are those features variable in N. albigena? |
