Hello everyone, I photographed this horsefly today on a rock next to a creek in the Black Forest, southwest Germany. The size was 18 to 20 mm. I think the animal belongs to the genus Hybomitra. Hello Siggi, according to Theo's book "Families of Flies with Three Pulvilli (Zeegers, Schulten)" it could be the male H. auripila.

I tend to agree. Aterrima is not in the book and should be considered. But males auripila can be very dark (my hypothesis that that is the reason Mally considered them synonym), this seems to be such a one. DNA is different. Theo |
