Correctly showing femur 3 basal 3/4 black? ( not sure quite what the adpressed hairs look like or if they should be visible ) |

Clearly ¾ - the alternative, S. vitripennis, has only ⅔ black. And to be honest, I also have never seen the adpressed hairs on my photos... In my opinion - based on van Veen's key - your fly is S. torvus! Greetings, Eric Kloeckner |

Repeating what I stated on the parallel thread for clarity : ...other observations of hoverflies in Iceland have been noted as being dark on iNaturalist. When I raised this with Erling Olafsson at the National Institute here, he said it was very typical for Icelandic specimens that they would be darker than their continental equivalents. |
