Hello,

I found this 8 mm male last night at our door lantern. Because of the strongly hairy eyes I first thought of a Polietes, but it seems to be a Helina. At first the abundant H. evecta comes into mind, but this fly seems to have bare aristae. Possibly the rare Helina annosa?

Hallo Jürgen,

I think Helina is correct but we cannot decide whether it's evecta or annosa:

Manual CE Muscidae (Gregor et al)
annosa:
"Eyes densely long haired, arista long plumose..."

evecta:
"Eyes densely long haired in both sexes, arista long plumose..."

and in the key:
"
- Hind femur with strong anteroventrals confined to distal half;
scutellum almost bare ventrally => annosa
- Hind femur with a complete row of strong anteroventrals confind to distal half;
scutellum setulose ventrally => evecta
"
Greetings, Eric Kloeckner

Thanks a lot, Eric! Then I remembered it wrong, that the arista in H. annosa is bare. Frown
Best regards,
Jürgen
