I first thought this ws a Xylocopa violacea. But after seing the photo I'm no longer sure, the wing colour doesn't match. Quite big, about 20-25mm long. Thank you, Joaquim Gaspar Alvesgaspar attached the following image:  [134.87Kb] |

Look at faunaeur.org at other species occurring on Iberia.. But as it is winter, this can be an old one, so colors can be paler than with fresh specimens. |

Hello, For me, this would be a male X. violacea in France, with the red tip of the antennas. But maybe there are more species over there. Pierre Duhem |

It's a male of X. violacea. It the only european species with red antennal tip. Regards, Christian |

I just looked for the data in the Fauna Europea, but it doesn't look so confidental. X. violacea is common and widespread in Southern Europa, also in Portugal, and in warmer parts of Central Europa (in Germany, it spreads northwards within the last years). But Finnland? X. valga, a similar species is also widespread in the south, but never in Finnland. Also data lacks of many countries. But, the Fauna Europaea was a very special project, and its quality (in Aculeata) is not the best. Regards, Christian |
