Hi forum,

Found this on the 15. Mai 2022 in Austria, Vienna. On a dead treetrunk.
Fagus sylvatica => beech.

inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/197836615/large.jpg

Size 5-6 mm.

Earlier in April that year on the same treetrunk I found this:

inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/190318745/large.jpg

This was identified by Jan Maca as Stegana hypoleuca.

Could the upper one be the same as the lower, the colouration is different.
(Thread here: https://diptera.i..._id=105640)

Thanks!
Regards
Per

The upper picture is S. mehadiae. Both species may occur sympatrically and in greater numbers (Bohemia: around Hluboká), which was proved by examination of their genitalia. Still, I have never seen both on the same trunk. They are stenotopic, prefer natural decidual forests. Both were collected from Austria only very long ago, the new findings reward publication. It would be of help if you would collect at east S. hypoleuca in order to prove some morphologic details. This needs good luck, I cross my fingers.

If you did collect specimens, and could store at in ethanol at -20, I know someone who would love to sequence their genomes!

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
