Here's another Metopia looking a little different from the one photographed on 23rd May. This photos were take on 29th May 2021, on a field maple hedge in an garden (Lüneburg, Niedersachsen, Germany). Hi Jann, this male looks indeed different from the other one in your previous thread. Not all important characters can be seen, but it's probably Metopia staegeri.

Hi Jann, my suspicion of M. staegeri was based on the visisble difference between your 2 Metopia. But maybe we have a little chance if you look at the original images to find out if the "Tarsomeres of fore tarsus posteriorly with elongated, somewhat curled hairs" (from: A Revision of Oriental and Eastern Palaearctic Species of Metopia, By Thomas Pape, Copenhagen). The traditional name for staegeri is rondaniana, maybe it is as such on the NS list. In any case, it is a common species definitely present in NS. As for the ID, I agree with eklans. The contrast on frons between white and dark is less extreme than in argyrocephala, a clear indication that this is staegeri. Theo |

The Sarcophagidae are one of the diptera families for which the knowledge in Niedersachsen is really poor. Many species were not published any more since the 1930s. At the moment, there are only two Metopia species on the list: Metopia argyrocephala and Metopia campestris, with the last records published in 1939 in both cases. Jens-Hermann Stuke is about to publish a new paper with Diptera species recently added to the Niedersachsen Checklist. Do you think this record of M. staegeri has enough evidence to be included in the paper? Greetings, Jann |

In Stuke (2019), there are only two Metopia species listed: M. argyrocephala and M. campestris - the latter only mentioned for the 1930s. And in the Updates (http://www.conopi.../styled-2/), Metopia is not mentioned so far. Jann |
