Hi,

Would I be right in saying this is an Asilidae. Photographed in South East England during July.

I hope Mark van Veen can confirm, but this should be a Neoitamus.

That is very useful. I can find (at present) only two species of neoitamus recorded in England. N.cothurnatus and N. cyanuras. N.cyanuras being the more common. Photos I have found of N.cyanuras do look remarkably similar to mine. I'll keep looking for a photo of N.cothurnatus to compare.
